Keb Barshack (he/him) is a queer trans Vietnamese-Jewish multidisciplinary artist from the Bay Area, California. These identities are vital to his art and being. He explores through movement, sound, and crochet, all infused with transgender based theology - digesting their intersections through dance. He has a background in primarily ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, and has worked in many other forms of dance. Keb recently graduated from The New School with a BA in Contemporary Dance with a secondary focus in religious studies. Through his studies at the New School, Keb has had the honor of working with inspirational New York-based choreographers and teachers, such as the Bill T. Jones Arnie Zane Company, Katy Pyle, Ogemdi Ude, Katie Workum, Mariana Valencia, and many more.
Keb’s love of music comes through in his dancing. Having played the guitar, piano, ukulele, bass, and drums and singing, he loves to play with anything he can get his hands on. He spent his formative years obsessed with writing and producing his own songs. Growing up attending Jewish summer camp, he developed a foundational love of Jewish music and the sacredness of community. Keb has done extensive work creating magical holy spaces in Jewish and secular contexts. He has worked to pass on the gift of the sacred musical knowledge that his mentors gave to him through teaching, mentoring, and leading many others in his Jewish community. Keb has found a newer love in fiber arts, creating crochet works for performance. His work has been featured in the Boulet Brothers’ Dragula as well as Them magazine. All of Keb’s mediums come together in his performance art. He is committed to a lifelong exploration of the intersections of queerness, transness, prayer, and performance and how the queer can be the most sacred thing in the world.
I’m currently available for crochet commissions and dance collaboration.
